Drone LiDAR Survey in Birmingham, AL

Ridge and Valley ground does not sit still for a camera.

Birmingham sits on the southern end of the Appalachians, and the ground shows it. Long parallel ridges — Red Mountain, Shades Mountain, Sand Mountain's tail, the Oak Mountain block — with narrow valleys between them, cut by the Cahaba, the Locust Fork, and the Little Cahaba. Elevation swings several hundred feet inside a single parcel. Almost all of it is wooded. And a large share of the metro's growth is going onto exactly that kind of terrain.

That is why drone LiDAR earns its keep here. Paragon Aerial Solutions flies the Birmingham metro from Tuscaloosa, about an hour west, with the 24-foot mobile command trailer on site and 53,000-plus acres of LiDAR, mapping, and site work in the last 12 months behind it.


Ridge and Valley terrain

In flat country, photogrammetry and a few ground shots will get you a usable surface. On a Jefferson or Shelby County slope under hardwood, they will not. The problem is not just the trees — it is that the ground under them is steep and broken, with rock ledges, old road cuts, and drainage that changes direction every hundred feet. A sparse cross-section walked by a crew interpolates across all of that. A drone LiDAR flight with hundreds of points per square meter does not.

The bare-earth model is what a civil engineer needs to lay out a road on a ridge lot, size a detention pond at the bottom of a hollow, or figure out how much rock is coming out of a cut. We fly terrain-following missions so the sensor holds a consistent height above the slope, which keeps point density even from the ridge top to the creek.

Timberland: Jefferson County has about 381,400 acres of timberland and Shelby County about 344,900, per the Alabama Forestry Commission's 2024 Forest Resource Report. For a metro county, that is a lot of wooded ground still waiting to be developed.


Redevelopment and brownfield sites

Birmingham was built on iron, coal, and steel, and the industrial footprint that left behind — furnace sites, rail yards, slag fields, old mine ground on the western edge of the city — is being redeveloped a parcel at a time. These sites are a particular kind of mapping problem. The existing conditions are a mix of pavement, rubble, fill of unknown depth, overgrown lots, and structures that may or may not be coming down.

A drone LiDAR flight captures all of it in one pass: the ground under the brush, the building footprints, the pavement grades, the fill piles. The classified point cloud separates ground from vegetation from structures, so the engineer gets a clean existing surface and a record of what was on it. An orthomosaic on the same mission gives the design team something to draw on. When the site is cleared, a second flight gives a cut and fill volume against the first.

We are not environmental consultants and do not sample soil. What we deliver is the surface the consultant's boring plan and the engineer's grading plan are laid on.


Quarries and aggregate pits

The limestone and dolomite of the Ridge and Valley are quarried across the metro, and the sand and gravel operations along the rivers add to it. Aggregate operations need two things from a mapping company on a schedule: stockpile volumes and pit progress.

On an open quarry floor and a stockpile yard, that is usually a photogrammetry job, and we quote it that way because it costs less. Where LiDAR comes in is the overgrown edges — the reclaimed benches, the wooded buffer, the overburden pile the kudzu took — and the annual full-site survey where the operator wants a bare-earth model of everything inside the permit boundary. Same trailer, same crew, the sensor that fits the ground. Monthly volumes against a design surface or against last month's flight are standard deliverables.


The Cahaba and the creek bottoms

The Cahaba runs the length of the metro before it breaks out into the Black Belt, and the ground along it — plus Shades Creek, Buck Creek, the Little Cahaba, and the Locust Fork drainages — is where the flood, drainage, and permitting questions live.

The river: The Nature Conservancy describes the Cahaba as "Alabama's longest free-flowing river," with a 1,870-square-mile watershed and "131 species of freshwater fish, more than any other river its size in North America." That matters for anyone building near it, because the floodplain and the buffers are regulated and the topography under the canopy decides where they fall. A bare-earth surface along a wooded creek bottom shows the bank, the terrace, and the low ground that public elevation data smooths over. It is the same terrain model that our levee and impoundment work uses.


Shelby, Jefferson, and St. Clair growth

The metro is growing outward — south through Shelby County along I-65 and Highway 280, east into St. Clair along I-20, and into the wooded northern edges of Jefferson.

Growth: Shelby County added about 3,576 residents and St. Clair about 2,008 from 2023 to 2024, both among the six Alabama counties with net in-migration above 1,400 people, per the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research.

Almost every one of those new subdivisions and commercial pads is going onto wooded, sloped ground. The sequence that works: a licensed surveyor sets the boundary and control, we fly drone LiDAR for the bare earth before clearing and an orthomosaic on the same mission, and the engineer designs from both. What already exists

The USGS 3D Elevation Program covers the Birmingham area, and you should download it first. It is a regional surface at low density, collected whenever the block was flown, and it does not know about the pad graded last spring. Use it to scope the project; use a project flight tied to your engineer's control to design it.

Boundaries, plats, easements, and sealed drawings belong to a licensed Alabama Professional Land Surveyor, and design documents to a licensed Professional Engineer.
