The ground here has changed since the last time anybody flew it.
Huntsville has a problem most places would like to have: the ground is changing faster than anyone has mapped it. The public LiDAR over north Alabama was flown in 2019. Since then the city has added tens of thousands of residents and tens of thousands of housing units, and most of that went onto pasture and timber in Madison and Limestone counties that the 2019 data shows as pasture and timber. For anyone designing on that ground today, the free elevation model is a picture of a place that no longer exists.

Growth: The City of Huntsville put its estimated population at 249,102 as of July 1, 2025, a 15.9% increase since the 2020 Census, and reported that more than 20,500 new housing units have been added since 2020. At the county level, Madison added about 9,464 residents and Limestone about 4,139 from 2023 to 2024 — the two largest gains in Alabama — per the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research.
Every one of those housing units sits on ground that was graded, ditched, and drained, and the subdivisions still on the drawing board are going into the same kind of ground: rolling pasture, cedar glades, and hardwood drains west of the city in Limestone County and out toward Hazel Green, Harvest, and New Market. That is where a civil engineer needs a current existing-conditions surface, and it is where the difference between a 2019 regional model and a project flight from this month is the difference between designing on the real ground and designing on a memory of it.
The USGS 3D Elevation Program flew a north Alabama block in 2019 that covers Limestone, Madison, Jackson, Morgan, and Marshall counties. It is free from The National Map, and it is good regional data — a couple of points per square meter, with vertical accuracy suited to watershed and floodplain work.

Download it first. It is the right tool for scoping a tract, sizing a watershed, and understanding how a drainage works at the county scale. What it is not is dense enough to design a pad, a pond, or a road on, or current enough to show anything built after it was flown. A project drone LiDAR flight puts hundreds of points per square meter on the ground, the week you need it, tied to your engineer's control with an RTK base on site.
The typical Madison or Limestone County development parcel looks easy from the road: open pasture, a few fencerows, a pond. Then you walk it and find the hardwood drain that runs the length of the back line, the cedar thicket on the limestone outcrop, and the wet-weather creek that decides where the detention pond has to go.
On the open part, drone photogrammetry builds a fine surface and costs less; we fly it and quote it that way. On the drains and the thickets, the camera sees canopy and nothing else. A LiDAR flight covers the whole parcel with one sensor, gets ground returns through the gaps, and delivers a bare-earth surface the engineer can lay the stormwater design on. Fly it again after grading and there is an as-built surface and a cut-and-fill volume.
North Alabama is also karst country — sinkholes, closed depressions, and drainage that disappears underground. A dense bare-earth model shows the depressions that the regional data smooths over, which is the kind of thing an engineer wants to know before the detention pond is sited on top of one.
Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park are the reason the metro grows, and they generate mapping work of their own — research and office campuses, contractor facilities, and the infrastructure that serves them.

Flying near the Arsenal and the airport means airspace coordination, which we handle as a normal part of mission planning — our pilots are FAA Part 107 certified and we file for authorization where it is required. For campus and facility work the deliverables are the same as anywhere: existing-conditions topo, orthomosaic, construction progress, and volumes.
South of the city the Tennessee River and its Wheeler Lake reach spread out into wide bottoms, sloughs, and backwater — Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, the Flint and Paint Rock drainages coming in from the east, and private duck ground and farmland along both banks. Hardwood canopy over flat ground with old channels under it is the textbook drone LiDAR case: a camera maps the treetops, and the bare-earth surface from a LiDAR flight shows where the water actually goes.
That surface is what a levee or impoundment is designed against, and it is the starting point for flooded timber modeling — what acreage floods at each pool elevation before dirt moves. Leaf-off winter flights get the most pulses to the ground under hardwood.
East of downtown the ground climbs onto Monte Sano and the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, and the terrain changes completely: steep timbered slopes, rock bluffs, and hollows that drop several hundred feet in a short distance. Mountain lots and roads on the plateau edge are a Ridge-and-Valley kind of problem — sparse ground shots interpolate across ledges and hollows, and a camera never sees the dirt. We fly terrain-following LiDAR missions so the sensor holds a consistent height above the slope and the point density stays even from the bluff line to the creek.
Timberland: Madison County has about 199,700 acres of timberland and Limestone about 96,400, per the Alabama Forestry Commission's 2024 Forest Resource Report. Much of Madison's is on the plateau edge and along the river.
