Tuscaloosa is where Paragon Aerial Solutions lives. The fleet, the 24-foot mobile command trailer, the RTK gear, and the processing workstations are all here, which means a Tuscaloosa-area LiDAR job has no mobilization to speak of and usually gets a quick date on the calendar. We have flown 53,000-plus acres of LiDAR, mapping, and site work in the last 12 months, and a lot of those acres were within an hour of the shop.
This page is about the ground itself — what makes west-central Alabama a place where the elevation that matters is usually under something, and what we do about it.
The Black Warrior River runs right through the county, and its bottoms — along with the North River, Hurricane Creek, Big Sandy, and the Sipsey to the west — are the classic drone LiDAR problem. Wide floodplain, hardwood canopy, old sloughs and relic channels, private levees of uncertain height, and a landowner or engineer who needs to know exactly where the water goes.
A camera flown over a Black Warrior bottom gives you a model of the treetops. A LiDAR flight gets ground returns through the gaps, and the bare-earth surface that comes out shows the sloughs, the natural levees along the old channel, and the low spots that hold water three weeks after a rain. That is the surface a duck impoundment or a levee is designed against, and the same model feeds our flooded timber modeling — what acreage floods at each pool elevation before anyone moves dirt.
Leaf-off winter flights get the most pulses to the ground under hardwood. If a bottom job can wait for December through February, it usually should.
The four counties around us are timber country, and not just in a general sense.
County timberland: Tuscaloosa County has about 697,500 acres of timberland, Pickens about 473,200, Bibb about 313,500, and Hale about 280,400, per the Alabama Forestry Commission's 2024 Forest Resource Report. Statewide, the report puts Alabama timberland at 22.92 million acres, the third largest commercial timberland base in the nation.
That is planted loblolly on the uplands, mixed pine-hardwood on the slopes, and hardwood in the drains — the kind of cover where foresters, timber companies, and landowners need drainage mapping, road layout, SMZ delineation, and harvest planning on tracts that run to thousands of acres. Larger tracts price lower per acre, which is why timber work is some of the best-value LiDAR we fly. The cost page explains why.
Closed-canopy loblolly is the hardest case for any LiDAR sensor, because the pulses have fewer gaps to find. We will tell you before we fly what a given stand will support, and where a thinned or recently cut area will give a better surface than a 15-year-old plantation.
The Mercedes-Benz plant at Vance anchored the I-20/59 corridor east of town, and the supplier parks, logistics yards, and industrial pads that followed it are still being built.
Plant scale: The Vance facility is described as "3.2 million square feet" and "almost one mile from end to end" by the Encyclopedia of Alabama. Supplier and expansion figures change; check current sources for anything you plan to cite.
Industrial site work in this corridor is a mix of jobs. Existing-conditions topo on a wooded parcel before design starts — that is LiDAR. Monthly pad progress and stockpile volumes once the ground is cleared — that is often photogrammetry, flown cheaper on the same trailer. Construction progress documentation for the owner or lender — either or both. We quote the tool that fits the ground, not the one with the higher price.
The University of Alabama's growth has pushed student housing, retail, and subdivisions outward along Highway 69, Highway 82, and the Northport side of the river. Much of that development goes into cutover and pine, which means the site an engineer is designing on is not visible in aerial imagery until the clearing crew has been through.
Growth: Tuscaloosa County added about 2,376 residents from 2023 to 2024 and was one of six Alabama counties with net in-migration above 1,400 people, per the University of Alabama Center for Business and Economic Research.
For a subdivision, a commercial pad, or a stormwater design on wooded ground, the sequence that works is a drone LiDAR flight for bare earth before clearing, an orthomosaic on the same mission, and a licensed surveyor's boundary and control alongside it. The engineer designs from both. We are not the surveyor; we are the dense topo between their shots.
The USGS 3D Elevation Program has LiDAR over west Alabama, and it is worth downloading first for any tract. It is a regional surface — typically a couple of points per square meter, collected whenever the block was flown — and it will not show a pad graded last spring or a stockpile measured last month. Use it to scope. Use a project flight, tied to your engineer's control, to design.
