Drone LiDAR Survey in Montgomery, AL

Flat country is where a few inches of elevation matter most.

Montgomery sits where the Black Belt prairie meets the Alabama River, and that pairing is the whole story for mapping here. The prairie is flat, open, and clay-bottomed — ground where a few inches of elevation decide whether a field drains, whether a pond holds, and where the water goes when it does not. The river bottoms are the opposite: wide, wooded, and full of old channels. Both kinds of ground need a bare-earth surface, and only one of them can be mapped with a camera.

Paragon Aerial Solutions flies the Montgomery area from Tuscaloosa, roughly an hour and a half away, with the 24-foot mobile command trailer on site. We have mapped 53,000-plus acres of LiDAR, mapping, and site work in the last 12 months, and a lot of it looks like the ground around Montgomery.


The Black Belt prairie

The Black Belt runs west from Montgomery through Lowndes, Dallas, Perry, and Hale, and the soils are the point: dark, heavy, calcareous clay over chalk. It sheds water slowly and holds it well, which is why it is pond country and cattle country and why it went into row crops a long time ago.

On open prairie, honest advice is that drone photogrammetry usually does the job and costs less than LiDAR. A camera flown over a pasture or a soybean field builds an excellent surface, good enough for drainage layout, pond feasibility, and land-forming volumes. We fly a lot of it. Where the Black Belt turns into a LiDAR job is at its edges — the cedar thickets on the chalk outcrops, the hardwood drains between fields, the wooded creek bottoms that every prairie tract eventually runs into. The drainage question that matters usually lives there, under the trees, and that is where the camera stops seeing the ground.


Catfish ponds and agriculture

West of Montgomery is the heart of Alabama's farm-raised catfish industry, and catfish ponds are an elevation problem before they are anything else. A levee that is six inches low on one side, a pond bottom that does not drain to the harvest basin, a water supply that has to be pumped uphill — all of those are decided by the ground surface before the first yard of dirt moves.

The industry: Alabama is the second largest producer of U.S. farm-raised catfish, with about 14,100 water acres across 89 farms in 2022, located primarily in Hale, Dallas, and Greene counties, per the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

For a new pond or a rebuild, a bare-earth model at project density lets the designer set the levee alignment and crown, calculate cut and fill, and check the drain grade before construction. For an existing farm, a flight gives an as-built of every levee on the place and a volume on anything that needs raising. The same levee workflow applies to duck impoundments and irrigation reservoirs, and the flooded timber modeling we do for waterfowl ground starts from the same surface.


The Alabama River bottoms

The Alabama forms at the junction of the Coosa and Tallapoosa just north of the city and runs southwest through wide, wooded bottoms. Those bottoms, and the Tallapoosa and Catoma Creek drainages that feed them, are the classic case for drone LiDAR: hardwood canopy, sloughs, relic channels, private levees, and a landowner or engineer who needs to know what floods at what stage.

A LiDAR sensor gets ground returns through the canopy gaps and builds the bare-earth surface from them. The result shows the natural levees, the low ground, and the ditches that public elevation data smooths over. Leaf-off winter flights get the most pulses to the ground; if a bottom job can wait for December through February, it usually should.

Timberland: Montgomery County has about 257,900 acres of timberland, per the Alabama Forestry Commission's 2024 Forest Resource Report. Most of the county's wooded ground is along the river and creek drainages.


Hyundai and the industrial parks

The Hyundai plant south of the city anchored a corridor of supplier plants, logistics yards, and industrial parks along I-65 and Highway 80 that is still being built out.

Industrial site work here splits the same way it does everywhere. Existing-conditions topo on a wooded or brushy parcel before design — drone LiDAR. Pad progress, stockpile volumes, and construction documentation once it is cleared — often photogrammetry, cheaper on the same trailer. Either way the deliverable is a surface the civil engineer can design from and the owner can track earthwork against.


Pike Road, Prattville, and the growth ring

The metro is growing east into Pike Road, north across the river into Prattville and Millbrook, and out along the Wetumpka corridor. Much of that growth goes into pasture and pine, and the sites are a mix — open enough that a camera works on part of the parcel, wooded enough in the drains that only LiDAR sees the ground.

The sequence that works for a subdivision or commercial pad: a licensed surveyor sets the boundary and control, we fly drone LiDAR for the bare earth and an orthomosaic on the same mission, and the engineer designs from both. Fly it again after grading and you have an as-built surface and a volume.


What already exists

The USGS 3D Elevation Program has LiDAR across central Alabama, and it is worth downloading before you call anyone. It is a regional surface at low density, collected whenever the block was flown. It will not show a pond built last year or a pad graded last spring, and it is not tied to your engineer's control. Use it to scope; use a project flight to design.

Paragon is not a licensed surveying firm. Boundaries, plats, easements, and sealed drawings belong to a licensed Alabama Professional Land Surveyor, and design documents to a licensed Professional Engineer. Montgomery is about an hour and a half from our base, and the trailer comes to the site.
